As a student, i did not use Microsoft word until 9th grade my freshman year of high school. There we used google docs instead of Microsoft word. I actually enjoy using google docs more than Microsoft word. Typically, I am not doing anything extravagant, just writing a paper or taking some notes in class. Microsoft word is often complicated for no reason. I see the small number of features in google docs as a plus and not a downside.
I think ISTE standards are very important so that the use of technology can be used for education worldwide. ISTE is important for K-12 as not everyone might have the resources to learn technology at home. Going into the workforce knowing how certain programs like Microsoft office, word, excel, and outlook are very important to employers. I think collaborator standards are my favorite. It's really good to have the skills to collab on group projects to know for the real world.
I believe "digital native" is very real. My grandfather, for example has no idea how technology works. While I on the other hand grew up with it so it's not a problem. Growing up as a digital native and always having technology around me was always a plus to me. But I also see it as a downside as I'm very dependent on technology. If even one of my pieces of technology broke or whatever I would severely hurt my everyday flow. While digital immigrants arent so dependant on technology and use it as a aid to everyday life but are not dependent on it.
I think its really great how you used your grandfather as an example that contrasts yourself. Growing up in different time period can both create new opportunities and new obstacles, many people view technology differently and i can greatly impact how we go about our everyday lives.
